Accepting Clients

Hello! I'm Dr. Cathy Forbes, a clinical psychologist with 20+ years of experience facilitating growth, healing and hope.

Clinical Psychologist in Portsmouth, NH

About My Clients

My clients are curious about themselves and the world, take an active part in therapy, and want to make positive changes. They are open to learning new things, even if that might sometimes be challenging. Often, they are connected to marginalized communities whose mental health is impacted by societal factors. Those looking to address depression, anxiety, trauma, relationships, grief, self-esteem, stress, and/or gender identity would be a good fit. I work with youth and adults ages 12+.

My Background and Approach

My education and training has shaped my therapy practice. I received a B.A from Smith College and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from George Washington University. I have post-doctoral speciality training in adolescent and young adult mental health, as well as in gender affirming care; I have had the privilege of working with the transgender community for over 20 years. Additionally, I am certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and trauma specific interventions. I strive to assist my clients through a collaborative approach to psychotherapy. I utilize cognitive behavioral, family-systems, trauma-informed, feminist/multicultural, and gender affirming approaches. In addition to individual therapy, I also provide evaluations and letters for gender affirming medical care and procedures. I truly enjoy accompanying clients on their journeys of discovery and positive change.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe that it is essential to consider context in order to be effective - our communities, families and society impact all of us. I value multi-cultural and systemic perspectives and incorporate them into my treatment approach. The diverse experiences, identities and histories that my clients have shared with me have had a profound and positive impact on my work as a clinical psychologist. I believe that psychologists should use their training and knowledge not only to help individuals, but also to promote positive change in society, including supporting marginalized communities.
