Reality therapy is a type of counseling that helps people change their behaviors by identifying their needs and making choices to fulfill them. It was introduced by William Glasser in 1965.
Reality Therapy focuses on the now. We all have a past that affects us and while acknowledging that is key, living in it just keeps us stuck. There are five basic human needs Reality Therapy focuses on and when we aren't getting our needs met, it shows up in various spaces of our lives. The interventions and skills learned in Reality Therapy help to ensure are living in the now, working towards our future and not stuck trying to change the past.
— Judy Waitley, Licensed Mental Health CounselorIn addition to the training received at school and the books I have read on Choice Theory and Reality Therapy, I have had the privilege of taking training on Reality Therapy with Dr. Robert E. Wubbolding, Senior Faculty at the William Glasser Institute.
— Troy Longo, Addictions CounselorA Reality Therapist focuses on helping individuals take control of their choices and behaviors to create meaningful change in their lives. Rooted in Choice Theory, reality therapy emphasizes personal responsibility, problem-solving, and present-focused solutions rather than dwelling on past issues. As a reality therapist, I guide clients in identifying their unmet needs, examining their current behaviors, and developing actionable steps to achieve their goals.
